Kelly grew up in Swan Hills in northern Alberta. He started playing drums at age 12 and was playing professionally by the age of 14 years old. Moving to Vancouver Island in his mid teens, Kelly joined the Sue Medley Quartet, and studied with master musicians, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Eventually returning to Alberta (Calgary), Kelly established himself on the scene and has gained a solid reputation for his fine musicianship. Kelly has worked with top blues artists such as Doug Riley, David Vest, Brent Parkin, and Jack de Keyzer among the many. He is currently with Amos Garretts Modern Blues Quartet, Kat Danser and the Tall Tales, Steve Pineos various projects and the Du-rite Aces.
